“How did I get to be the tenth?” Cody asked. The last time he checked, he was lower than that. Miles was eighteenth in the ranking. He had gone up too.

“I think the Frost King absorbed The Divine Chalice,” Miles supplied, as Hilda and a tall, slim man ran to join them. He wore a snug black stretchy shirt and a corduroy jacket over that, with black cargo pants. He gave Miles a respectful nod before giving Cody a curious glance.

“Are you ready?” Miles asked.

“Yes, boss. We are moving now, yes?” Bran asked. Miles nodded.

“This is Cody. Or King of Valgrits.”

Bran glanced at Cody again. This time, Cody knew he was being measured. He ignored them until they led him out of the domain and started the long trek toward the target they had chosen for him.

“This makes you miss the cars, doesn’t it?” Miles said after they’d walked for hours. Cody nodded. He wondered if Miles couldn’t sense that they were being watched or if the old man just didn’t care. He could feel a particularly sharp attention on him, as if whoever it was didn’t care that he knew they were watching.

Cody saw the walls even before Bran pointed it out. It seemed endless, stretching on without a clear boundary. They finally stopped a good distance away. Far enough that they wouldn’t be seen, but Cody knew someone would have noticed their approach already. That wasn’t the problem though. What bothered him was how high the wall seemed to be.

“Warren Stonewall,” Miles said, once again answering the question in Cody’s mind. “Smart to put a high wall over your domain, but that must have taken a lot of mana to erect.”

“You are thinking of besieging him?” Cody asked. Miles shook his head.

“Can you sense the power within the wall?” Miles asked. Cody frowned. Something was blocking his perception. He couldn’t extend it further than a few feet to the wall.

“What is that about?” Cody asked, unable to look away from the wall. It was majestic, and a perfect protection for those on the other side. He imagined how secure Valgrits would be with a twenty-foot wall around it, and he wished he could make Warren his ally instead.

The thought of betraying Miles crossed his mind, but Cody banished it as quickly as it appeared. He suddenly realized why Miles took him to Folks-Town first. What he saw and experienced had made him biased toward the man.

Or that is just the kind of man I am?

“We will have to break through the wall and fast,” Miles said. “Do you think you can do that?”

“How thick do you think it is?” Cody asked. He could see a few guards walking at the top of the wall. That meant it was thick enough for a walkway. But he had a skill that might just help with that.

“I think so,” Cody said, a plan already coming together in his mind. “But I will need time.
